TIMMS Harry Oliphant Harry Oliphant Timms was a son of the late William Fowler Timms of “Mt Hesse”, Geelong, Victoria and was born in 1870 and received his education at Geelong College. He spent his early years on his father’s station, and then jackarooed for a period on James Russell's "Barunah Plains" station in that State, coming to Western Australia in 1893. On the discovery of gold at Coolgardie in 1893, being of an adventurous nature, he made his way over to those goldfields and engaged in the strenuous life of the pioneer miner, and at one time “footing it” to Albany for the mail. Three years' residence on the Goldfields folowed, the next move being to the North-West. After varied success on the fields he eventually joined Mr. A.R. Richardson on “Mardie” Station near Roebourne. Coincidently the latter had been jackeroo at “Mt Hesse” prior to his coming to W.A. Here Mr Timms spent several years, becoming manager of the property and he married Miss Amy Richardson. There Mr. Timms aquired pastoral holdings, and operated with success.

In 1909 he settled at Gnowangerup, (where members of the Richardson family were already established) and purchased “Glengarry” and also developed “Kebaringup” which he ran in conjunction. There the foundation of a merino stud on Peppin lines was established—a stud which was destined to play a part in the stud sheep world in this State. Later he sold “Glengarry” and “Kebaringup” and purchased “Telyarup” with a view to enlarging the stud. “Telyarup” bred sheep have been very successful in the Royal and local Shows over a number of years. He also established a successful Illewarra (sic) Shorthorn stud from the best strain in N.S.W. Feeling the conduct of “Telyarup” was too strenuous for him, he decided to sell that property, purchasing “Moyallen” and reducing the stud. This property he actively and successfully worked up to the time of his death. By his knowledge and skill he has brought the stud to a very high standard, producing wool of exceptional quality. His present holdin, "Moyallan", is of 1,600 acres, and is situated five miles north of the townsite. |
He enjoys a high reputation as a studmaster and expert on sheep, having played a very big part in building up the industry in the district. He is a prolific winner at the Royal Show in Perth and also at Great Southerh Shows. He will be remembered for his accomplishments in the stud and stock world, but beyond that, the name Harry Timms will ever be remembered as a man among men--kindly and genial—an honourable gentleman. The community is fortunate indeed to have possessed such men. |
